Thermal Transfer Ribbons

Ribbon grades, ordered by how much punishment the printed label has to take.

Wax Ribbon

  • For printing with short life cycle: mailing labels, shipping labels, grocery labels, FMCG products
  • Requires careful handling to avoid smudging
  • Most economical in cost

Wax Resin Ribbon

  • Gives better image durability and smudge proof printing
  • Withstands multiple scans, rough handling and outdoor elements
  • Ideal for labels with a long life cycle and multi-location movements

Resin Ribbon

  • Used on non-tearable materials where wax and wax resin cannot be used
  • Gives maximum image durability in difficult environmental conditions
  • Withstands harsh physical conditions and chemical exposure

Care / Premium Resin Ribbon

  • Used for wash-care applications on cloth labels and taffeta
  • Also used for tough drum label applications

How to Choose the Right Thermal Transfer Ribbon

The questions that matter, in the order that matters.

01

What is the label made of?

Paper takes wax. Polyester and other non-tearable materials need resin, because wax and wax resin will not bond to them properly.

02

How long must the print last?

Weeks on a grocery or mailing label means wax. Months of movement between locations means wax resin. Years in a hard environment means resin.

03

What will it face?

Rubbing, repeated scanning and outdoor exposure point to wax resin. Chemicals and harsh physical conditions point to resin.

04

Is it going on cloth?

Wash-care labels on cloth and taffeta need care premium resin, which is made to survive laundering rather than shelf life.

Barcode Consumables FAQs

What is the difference between direct thermal and thermal transfer labels?

A direct thermal label is heat sensitive and needs no ribbon, which makes it the cheapest way to print, but the image fades with heat, light and handling. A thermal transfer label is printed through a ribbon, which gives a far more durable image. Use direct thermal for receipts and short life labels, and thermal transfer for anything that has to survive storage, sunlight or chemicals.

Which ribbon should I use with my labels?

Match the ribbon to the label face and the life the print needs. Wax suits paper labels with a short life cycle and is the most economical. Wax resin gives smudge proof printing that survives multiple scans and outdoor handling. Resin is for non-tearable materials and harsh chemical or physical conditions. Care premium resin is for wash-care labels on cloth and taffeta.

Do you manufacture the labels yourselves?

Yes. Sun Data Processing commenced manufacturing operations at Mira Road, Thane in 2002 in the field of self-adhesive labels, plain as well as printed, and has supplied them alongside our printers ever since.

Will your labels and ribbons work with my printer?

Our tags and label stock are made to print on barcode printers, and we supply the same printers, so the media and the machine are specified together. Tell us the printer model and the application and we will confirm the material, the size and the ribbon before you order.

What sizes and materials are available?

Labels come in paper, polyester and speciality face materials. Paper tags are available from 220 to 300 gsm in roll format, plain or coloured. Sizes are made to the application rather than held to a fixed catalogue, so tell us the label size you need.

Do you supply receipt and billing rolls?

Yes. We supply direct thermal rolls for billing and receipt printing, including thermal receipt rolls, paper rolls and ATM paper rolls.
