Vision Sensors

Vision sensors, smart cameras and industrial barcode readers for the production line

Vision sensors check every item on a production or packing line automatically: whether a part, label, cap or code is present, correct, in the right place and readable, and rejects the ones that are not. Industrial barcode readers read 1D, 2D and direct part marked codes on moving parts for traceability, with factory network connections to the line's controller.

Common questions

What is the difference between a vision sensor and a smart camera?

A vision sensor such as the Banner iVu is an all-in-one device with camera, lens, light and controller for a focused inspection, like checking a label or a part is present. A smart camera such as the Banner VE offers higher resolutions and more inspection and identification tools for more demanding applications.

What can vision sensors check on a production line?

Presence and absence of parts, labels, caps and inserts; position and orientation; size and shape; colour; date and lot codes; and barcodes, rejecting faulty items automatically.

Can these read barcodes marked directly on metal parts?

Yes. Banner offers ABR Series models for direct part marking (DPM), and the VE Series smart cameras include identification tools for traceability.

How do they connect to the machine or PLC?

Through factory protocols such as EtherNet/IP, Modbus/TCP and PROFINET, as well as serial and discrete I/O, so the inspection result can stop the line or reject the part.
